From Trainee to Team Member: When a Journey Comes Full Circle
Written by Tir Coed / Friday 01 May 2026
Some of the most inspiring stories at Tir Coed don't begin with a job application – they begin with someone taking the brave first step to join one of our programmes.
People come to Tir Coed for many reasons. Some are looking to improve their wellbeing after a difficult period, while others want to learn new skills, spend more time outdoors or build the confidence to move forward in life. Whatever their starting point, every participant brings their own experiences, strengths and aspirations.
For a small number of people, that journey comes full circle.
After spending time developing new skills, building confidence and becoming part of the Tir Coed community, some former trainees go on to join our staff team. It's a transition that reflects not only personal growth, but also the supportive, inclusive environment we're proud to create.
Working in nature has a way of revealing strengths that people may not have recognised in themselves. Leading practical tasks, supporting fellow participants, learning about conservation or completing qualifications can all spark new ambitions. As confidence grows, so too does the belief that a career in the environmental or community sector is possible.
When former trainees become colleagues, they bring something incredibly valuable to our organisation: lived experience.
They understand what it feels like to walk into a session for the first time, unsure of what to expect. They remember the encouragement that helped them try something new, the friendships they built and the confidence they gained along the way. That insight helps them create welcoming, supportive spaces for the next cohort of trainees.
It's also a powerful reminder that there is no single route into meaningful employment. Skills can be learned, confidence can grow and opportunities can emerge when people are given the time and support they need.
At Tir Coed, we believe in investing in people. By creating pathways from participation to volunteering, training and employment, we're helping individuals build lasting futures while strengthening the communities we work alongside.
Every member of our team brings their own story, and those stories shape the way we work. Former trainees remind us every day why our programmes matter, because they've experienced the impact first-hand.
Watching someone arrive feeling uncertain and, months or years later, welcome others as a colleague is one of the greatest privileges of our work. It demonstrates what's possible when people are given opportunities to grow in confidence, develop practical skills and believe in their own potential.
Whether someone's journey leads to employment with Tir Coed, another organisation or a completely different path, every step forward is worth celebrating.
Sometimes, the best people to inspire the next participant are those who once stood exactly where they are today.
