LEAF Pilot Training Course - Elan Valley
Written by Tir Coed / Monday 03 April 2017
The LEAF Pilot Training Course at Elan Valley is half way through and have been working hard although the weather hasn't always been on our side.
The tutors, mentors and volunteers have been working hard over the last 6 weeks on various tasks and various sites across the Elan Valley.
Firstly, they have been working in Penbont Wood, identifying plants, trees, lichens and mosses in order to made a start on a full site survey of the wood. The site has now been mapped out ready for a work plan.
The volunteers had a chance to enjoy a fascinating licheny walk around a neighbouring RSPB woodland with Jimmy Carter where they were able to pick Jimmy's brain for some ideas for the sites in Elan.
Trees have been carefully identified and selected to be removed from the site and the volunteers have been working on removing these small and larger trees with various tools in order to protect the area for the rare lichens in the area. The volunteers have developed various practical skills during this task and all managed to get trees to land in the right place.
The training course has now moved on to the pill boxes site at the Elan Valley and they have been working on surveying and discussing the work plan. Work on this site include removing vegetation from around the pill boxes and restoring the line of sight between them.
The volunteers, tutors and mentors are doing a great job - keep up the good work guys!
