Winter Woodland Courses

Written by Tir Coed / Tuesday 31 January 2023

This winter we have been busy delivering woodland courses across Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion with thanks to the Natural Resources Wales Resilient Communities Grant 2022-24 who joined our list of funders back in November.

With a full complement of trainees, our Activity Leaders have been working hard delivering the first unit of our accredited courses which combine practical activity alongside taught theory with the completion of a digital workbook.

This week we put the spotlight on Ceredigion and find out what their trainees have been busying themselves with.

Following a well-attended Welcome Week, the Ceredigion team kicked off their 12-week Winter Sustainable Woodland Management course in late November at our woodland site Ty Llwyd near Llanfarian.

Over the last 6 weeks, our intrepid woodland learners have been:

  • clearing undergrowth and brambles along the paths and on the land above the workshops to improve community access to the woodlands.
  • coppicing hazel trees above the buildings then using the coppiced branches to create hazel hurdle woven fencing alongside the fire area and around the garden and growing space.
  • Replacing the railings and posts up to the buildings by processing timber from the woods by hand using heritage-type hand tools.
  • Replacing well-worn steps in several places onsite.
  • Installing hurdle safety fencing around the outdoor work area.
  • Re-installing the sign post board by the carpark, making it safe and stable.

The next stage of the course involves moving sites to Llanina woods near New Quay where the woods are more suited to develop the skills involved with tree felling.

To find out what courses are coming up in Ceredigion or any of the other counties, check out our calendar of events.
