'For Now and the Future’ is a new project supported by the Federation of Museums in Wales. In this project Ceredigion Museum bring together traditional hand woodworking tools from the museum stores, identify them and display them alongside the historic furniture.
Working with young makers from Tir Coed they are exploring the possibility of not only identifying the tools but also studying their use and the furniture which was produced. Over the course of the project a stick back chair has been constructed, but left half made. This will enable visitors to the new museum display to understand the process of production. Besides studying the tool collection at the museum visits are made to the woods to discuss woodland management and give a hands-on experience of using the tools. Not only are the tools identified but the types of wood used are also identified and the reasons for choosing those woods are given.
This project follows on from the earlier ‘Hadau’ project when the museum worked with members from Tir Coed. In that project young makers were given the opportunity to study wooden artifacts from the collection so as to inspire the production of items to sell in the museum shop.
