Tir Coed Volunteers in Action

Our Carmarthenshire Volunteer Group has been digging deep at Johnstown Centre, making huge strides in sprucing up the gardens. Thanks to a grant and in partnership with the Local Nature Partnership, our dedicated Tir Coed volunteers have planted over 100 tree whips, including holly, downy birch, crab apple, goat willow, hawthorn, and hazel. These trees will grow here for a year before finding new homes in community gardens, day centres, and green spaces all around the county.
Another interesting planting project was setting up a bog garden in a wet and boggy part of the site. It’s not just about looking good - it’s also about creating a new habitat for local wildlife.
This was our second planting day, following a fantastic first session last year when we planted raised beds with brassicas, onions, salads, and garlic. The best part? Most of our 10-strong volunteer team are previous trainees who have transitioned to volunteering after attending our training courses. They’re gaining experience, giving back to the community, and reaping the physical and mental benefits of working in nature.
Johnstown Centre, which supports adults with complex learning disabilities, now has a garden that their service users can enjoy. Some staff and service users joined our volunteers, excited to see the transformations and eager to spend more time outdoors as the weather warms up.
