Llanerchaeron - Sustainable Woodland Management
Written by Tir Coed / Tuesday 06 November 2018
In Ceredigion our 12 week Sustainable Woodland Management course is now halfway through, running from the beautiful National Trust woodlands at Llanerchaeron, near Aberaeron. The course has a focus on sustainable woodland management tasks and practices and introducing the trainees to Coppicing using traditional hand tools.
Aron Roberts the National Trust Ranger responsible for managing the sites woodlands has been really supportive in enabling this positive partnership to flourish for the benefit of the woods and its biodiversity, the trainees and the public that access the site.
Being a new site for Tir Coed, the trainees have spent a lot of time setting up camp, making fireside benches for them to relax in between the hard work. Unfortunately, the weather has not been on our side with monsoons and heavy rain, this has led to a lot of theory work and not as much practical work as we’d hoped. Going forward the group will be continuing to do some thinning work and coppicing.
Delivered by Wil Nickson and Cath Rigler, the course has 11 trainees, who are learning to identify tree species, the various layers of the woodland and different types of management practices. The 11 trainees make up a nice mixture of individuals who are getting along brilliantly.
