Powys trainees turn up the heat with ancient oven as sun starts to shine

The Powys team have been cooking up a storm in recent weeks and have already passed the midway point in their 12-week Woodland Carpentry course.
The trainees have constructed a cob oven – a primitive clay oven used since ancient times by diverse cultures and societies for baking.
The oven is now being checked and tested for cracks while it dries before it is put to good use feeding hungry Tir Coed participants.
In addition, the trainees have used a variety of hand tools to make a table and benches from an ash tree that was felled in the village due to die-back.
We currently have seven trainees taking part on the course and they have really gelled and are working very well together as a team. We are also delighted to see each individual grow in confidence in both tool work and being with others.
The poor weather for much of the early part of the course meant that a lot of the work was carried out in the shelter of the barn, which we found ourselves sharing with two new lambs.
Spending time alongside these lovely animals has given the trainees a better understanding of farm life.
With the sun now blazing down and the summer back on course, we are all delighted to be able to get back to work outside once again.
