Greening Carmarthenshire though Tree Planting and Hedgelaying
Written by Tir Coed / Monday 15 April 2024
A very determined team of Tir Coed trainees recently faced down the worst of the Carmarthenshire weather to learn a broad set of new skills and were rewarded with some rare sunshine to admire the fruits of their labour.
When hedge-laying with Tir Coed you have to make your own mallets, so the first day was spent at the roundhouse, before the trainees tested their handiwork the following day knocking in stakes (and you will be relieved to hear that they all came through with flying colours).
Mallets and billhooks in hand they then took on the task of renovating an overgrown hedge on a local farm using traditional techniques. Undaunted by the hedge or the mud, they did a fantastic job, and are all excited to return to see the hedge once it has starting growing.
Although aching from their hedge-laying endeavours, like any good team of Tir Coed trainees, they were keen to learn more skills, so the following day they re-planted an area of woodland that had recently been clear-felled at Llyn Llech Owain Country Park. The felled conifers were being replaced with a variety of native broadleaf trees, so the trainees learnt how, why, where and when to plant different species of tree.
The main benefit of being kindly allowed to plant at Llyn-Llech Owain, is that at the end of the day we could all sit in the Café with a mug of tea, a piece of well-deserved chocolate cake, and new friends, reflecting on a fantastic week, and looking forward to using our newly learned skills in the future.
