Women in the Woods - Polly Williams

Tir Coed | March 8, 2019

In 2014 I was made redundant from my job as a homeless/housing adviser for a local charity, I had two young children and was more than ready for a career change... I love working as a gardener, a tutor for Tir Coed and horse logging. I hope that I am am lucky enough to have the rest of my working life outdoors, where I feel most inspired, strong and relaxed!

I have worked in outdoor education for more than 35 years now... the woods and the mountains are where I feel belonging and sharing my 'home' with the groups I work with brings me joy and feels like a good thing to do... I would very much encourage other women to be part of the woodland sector. The woods are a good place to work. The skills in this work are rewarding to learn.

On this day celebrating Women, I would say- You can do anything you put your mind to, so begin it now. Be kind to yourself because us women are under so much pressure, make time for what makes you happy and know that you are just as capable, intelligent, creative and strong as the men around you... I have come across both sexism & ageism in my professional life (although on the most part I have received respect & encouragement) when I have, I have held my head up high and risen above it, the proof, after all... is in the pudding.

I felt an instant connection with Tir Coed’s equal focus on the woods themselves – not just the benefits woodlands can bring to people, but also the benefits people can bring to woodlands... I’ve heard male foresters, who have worked in the sector for years, saying things like: “If it’s someone I don’t already know, I’d rather work with a woman, they don’t rely on brawn so much and so often have better technique and use their heads more”.

I have always loved being out in Nature. My inspiration for my Art work has for a long time been based on forms from Nature, especially in the way that things grow... The change Tir Coed made to my life was phenomenal... I would highly recommend women getting involved with the woodland sector. It is a great place to reconnect with nature, start new friendships and source inspiration.

I currently work as Project Manager for Rural Health and Care Wales, which is funded by four health boards. Being a working mother, childcare was always a problem when they were young... I also think that within the world of Business, a gender bias still exists at boardroom / higher levels of Management. When I was approached to consider becoming a Trustee of Tir Coed, I reviewed its objectives and felt aligned to these.

Is education more of a calling than a job? Well, for me the answer is yes, as I tend to see everything we do as a learning opportunity, which means that the possibilities to contribute to this process are endless... I know I approach everything in a creative way, and for me, this makes it a really enjoyable process. So, if I had to offer one piece of advice it would be …“Don’t be constrained by the imagined boundaries of a role, remember skills are transferrable, so follow your instincts and go make something your own and enjoy it!”
